About the event

Drum Making on the Full Moon

Medicine drum making under the full moon. The full moon will illuminate Mamayaku, the sacred water, to soak the hides, receiving the medicines of Pachamama, mother Earth, and the light of the ancestors, bringing life to the drum.

The medicine drum has long been used as a healing tool. It can be used for self healing or on others; sound healing, shamanic journey, holding space and more. The drum has the ability powerfully assist in breaking old patterns and visioning new realities. If the drum has been calling, we invite you to join us.

For many this marks the beginning of a new chapter in life.  There will be an ancestral altar, where we will call upon the ancestors to be with us in making the drums, and to walk with us as we carry forward  the medicine of the drum. This is an opportunity to call forth your deeper intentions and healing ancestral patterns to carry the drum with integrity, intention and purpose. The drums are made in a sacred way to honor the traditions, heal the wounds that divide and celebrate the gift of life. It is also alot of fun, community building and a way to begin a relationship of magic and healing with your drum.

About the drums, ethics, etc

All materials are ethically sourced and of the highest quality and there are lots of prayers during the process of making the drums. All materials are honored as a part of the sacred circle of life. Michael has invested many hours in learning methods to make drums that are both functional and beautiful.  Michael was called into the shamanic path in a near death experience calling him to learn from indigenous healers and elders in North and South America and South Africa. He is an apprenticed healer in the Quechua traditions of Ecuador. To learn more click here.

Anthropological research suggests the frame drum originated in Siberia thousands of years ago before migrating around the planet. Perhaps this is true, but traditional stories speak of the spirit of the drum coming down from the stars or Creator to carry the heartbeat of the Earth. Frame drums have played very important roles in North and South America, Europe, Asia and all over the world. For some interesting info visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_drum where there is a compilation of info and photos in various styles. At the time of writing this, there are not references for Native American use of this style of drum, only the larger Powwow drum. It would be nice to see that addition to the page. The drums made in the workshop are a contemporary style not connected with any particular tradition but playing important role in the modern revival of the old ways. Exact wrapping styles may vary between gatherings.

These workshops are offered with humility and the intention to heal, honor and lift the spirit of Pachamama, Mother Earth and heal the wounds that create conflict and division of the people and the circle of life.
